Unveiled in November 2001 to honor the National Geographic Society victims of the September 11th Pentagon tragedy, the Anacostia Explorers program provides local elementary school students with an innovative opportunity to document and broadcast their participation in a hands-on environmental education project on Kingman and Heritage Island. Students are taught basic applications of TV production and then broadcast their experiences through the production of six educational videos into classrooms and homes throughout the Anacostia Watershed thereby engaging students beyond the Anacostia River in a Meaningful Bay Experience while developing an appreciation of stewardship within their own communities.
